A stranger at the door: Drama to support literacy and socio-dramatic play

Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation

Description

Participants will engage with drama as a tool for learning in order to understand the essential relationship between sociodramatic play, literacy and education drama in early childhood classrooms. We have used the word drama, but this workshop is not about acting or theatre. Drama used as a tool for learning provides meaningful activities for young children to move into the ‘as if’ world co-created with their teacher. While in the ‘as if’ world children identify problems or tensions, explore possible solutions, try out the solutions, and reflect on an outcome together. The book Lon Po Po by Ed Young will be used to begin the exploration of the “as if’ world. After a direct experience with drama used as a tool for learning, participants will engage in a conversation with the presenters about this experience in order to make direct connections to what children learn from engaging in this type of mature play.
