Dr Holly Doel-Mackaway gave an invited paper at the 20th webinar on the Convention on the Rights of the Child run by the Diplomacy Training Program in conjunction with Youth Law Australia and Australian Lawyers for Human Rights.
Her paper, ‘Children’s Rights and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Australia’ examined the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child’s 2019 Concluding Observations on Australia’s 5th and 6th reports. The Committee’s recommendations repeatedly drew links to the SDGs including in relation to the mental health of children; free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education; the reduction of inequalities of outcome including by eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices; and on urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Dr Doel-Mackaway discussed the action that needs to be taken to achieve all 17 SDGs in relation to children’s rights in Australia. The presentation can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/gIOBG7tPP6A
