Colonial Monuments, Capitalism and Social Movements: An Ontological Account

    Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation

    Description

This paper is a philosophical-anthropology of what constitutes the monument. It presents an Ontological account of what constitutes the object. What exactly is the statue? Is it an aesthetic token symbolising one instance of a glorified history, or an insignia of sheer bourgeois and imperial symbolic and material violence. Is it symbolically benign and passive. As in, it represents a horrifying instance of the past and nothing more. Or is it a technique of violence, an emblematic reminder that the imperial and racist Repressive and ideological state apparatuses are still here watching?
