    Description

During Naqada IA–IIC/D of the Predynastic period (ca. 3800–3325 BCE) in the Egyptian Nile Valley, some communities produced animal figurines that thought to be cattle. People disposed of them in settlement contexts and placed them in burials, highlighting the multivocality of these figurines, and pointing towards the likelihood that they were produced for more than one purpose. Bovid figurines, unlike female anthropomorphic figurines, have remained at the margins of scholarly discourse until more recently as their function and social context is apparently more elusive than their anthropomorphic counterparts.
