Description
Principles around learning language and the relationship between home and school discourse influence the focus on understanding and acknowledging the language and literacy practices of students and their communities (Bernstein, 1990; Halliday, 2004; Martin & Rose, 2008; Painter, 1996 and Williams, 2000). Approaches to pedagogy are underpinned primarily by research into confirming identity and developing literacy with students from diverse backgrounds. Pedagogy is designed to support social and emotional aspects of student engagement to create texts about their own lives and language use, including first language use in classrooms (Cummins, Hu, Markus & Montero, 2015). The aim is to provide practical examples for incorporating inclusive strategies and perspectives to support student engagement in language and literacy in the school context (Cummins, 2000).Participants will take part in exploring both theoretical and practical input from presenters followed by demonstration and pair / small group participation in strategies which can be transferred to classrooms. This will include reflection on strategies and how they may be applied in varying contexts.Period | 11 Jul 2019 |
