Mathematics learning for all children can reach beyond basic numeracy to one that cultivates mathematical problem solving, reasoning, investigation, and modelling. This break-out workshop provides a framework for promoting mathematics learning through a ‘pattern and structure’ approach across all strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. The Pattern and Structure Assessment interview (PASA) and the Pattern and Structure Mathematics Awareness Program (PASMAP) K-3 has been implemented internationally and in Australian schools through research supported by the Australian Research Council. Assessment and pattern-eliciting tasks involving students in modelling, representing, visualising, generalising and recording will be explored. The workshop will enable participants to develop practical strategies for analysing children’s structural development and documenting their progress in practice.
