Early numeracy professional development research: A partnership between Edmonton Catholic Schools and University of Alberta

Our interest is in contributing to the transformation of pedagogical practice by working alongside preschool educators to advance the teaching of mathematics in the early years by honouring their knowledge and expertise. The professional development project with Edmonton Catholic Schools and the University of Alberta was focused on increasing pre-kindergarten teachers’ and facilitators’ knowledge, noticing and awareness of opportunities for teacher-child mathematical interactions in the classroom through targeted mathematical learning sessions. Changes in teaching practices through collaborative professional development were examined to understand the process of noticing and articulating opportunities for mathematical interactions in early years classrooms.
