Embodied Ethnographies:

Description

During this three-days conference/workshop, academics and artists will reflect upon and explore creative storytelling with a focus on embodiment and movement. Taking creative (auto)ethnography as embracing fluidity and movement, we will develop more “nuanced, embodied, complex, multi-sensory ways of experiencing and representing our surroundings” (Winther 2018: 895) and access “corporeal and experiential feelings of being there” (Pink 2015: 164). Inviting embodiment and movement into our research endeavours, artistic practices, collaborations and disseminations is allowing lived experience and its blurry contours to be fully present and alive. We will also explore how such creative methodology might result into acts of resistance. Some of the questions we will address are: In what ways is creative (auto)-ethnography a form of attention to self, others and the world (Barbour 2005; Clavel et al. 2018)? How can creative (auto-)ethnography tackle, generate or overcome power inequalities? How can artistic practices like dance and drawing as embodied and movement-based forms of visual thinking challenge the traditionally disembodied (and, as an extension, genderless) scholarly voice? And how can such artistic-based research invite new forms of learning, knowing, being and resistance? The first two days will consist of presentations by academics and artists, followed by a workshop on creative methodologies convened by visiting scholar A/Prof Karen Barbour.
