Description
A large proportion of the human population lives in coastal zones and human communities both modify the biophysical environment and are affected by coastal geophysical and climatic processes. Communities are already experiencing climate change impacts of increasing frequency and intensity of floods, storms and “sunny day” flooding from sea level rise (SLR) in low-lying areas. These impacts will continue and intensify, which calls for planning frameworks and methods to assist in developing social-ecologically responsive approaches to managing human retreat from threatened areas. Conveners and participants of the workshop have developed and tested frameworks for cross-realm or integrated land-sea planning frameworks to guide conservation planning for coastal catchments. They and others have investigated methods for assessing and mitigating the effects of sea level rise on ecological and developed features and human populations. There is need to integrate both approaches to improve coastal planning.Goal
Refine and expand existing operational frameworks for integrated land-sea planning, taking into consideration the impacts of sea level rise on social-ecological systems along the land-to-sea continuum, including planned human retreat.
Objectives
1. Refine current frameworks for integrated land-sea planning considering SLR
2. Explore the variety of issues inherent in ecologically based human retreat in coastal catchments
3. Review existing integrated coastal planning frameworks and identify how they can be modified to accommodate managed human retreat
4. Identify data and information needs to apply the framework and the outputs needed to support decision making by multiple sectors, at multiple scales and in different contexts
5. Identify needed publication products and plans for development and dissemination
