In this presentation, I will offer a linguistic perspective on the interpreting industry in the AI era. Grounded in Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics, it begins by examining the concept of ‘meaning’ in language. The presentation then compares language development by humans and AI, focusing on AI’s evolving role in interpreting. Using a test interpreting task with ChatGPT 4.0, I will evaluate its current capabilities in handling real-time dialogue interpreting. The findings will provide insights into the potential and limitations of AI in this field and propose future directions for the interpreting industry as AI technology continues to advance.
