    Description

The theme of the weekend—"The Imperiled Self: Exploration in the Psychic Life of Violence”—assumes an intimate connection between the psychic life of the individual and the social and cultural lifeworld. In this discussion, we lay the foundations for the weekend by exploring how large scale ideologies and institutions—as well as the intimate social practices of everyday life—shape individual level psychic processes (and conversely, how these intrapsychic processes feed back into the social world, shaping group-level dynamics). This discussion will highlight the two-way traffic between the psychological and the social in hope of setting an integrative tone for our discussions in the various sessions over the weekend.
