Masked translation priming in tri-linguals: implications for the tri-lingual mental lexicon.

Description

Masked priming is an established technique in psycholinguistics, primarily tapping into the early automatic lexical processing. We applied this technique in cross-language processing in trilinguals to investigate how translation equivalents are processed and represented in the mental lexicon. In two datasets with German-English-French and Korean-Mandarin-English trilinguals respectively, we show that L1 and L2 lexical dynamics is quite consistent with the bilingual lexical processing literature, but that L3 representation varies depending on how L3 was learned. I will discuss how these empirical findings imply about the architecture of lexical access in tri-linguals.
