Description

On February 25, 2026, the Institute for Indo-Pacific Security hosted a hybrid event: “New Strategic Frontier: Pacific Island Countries and U.S.–Japan Cooperation.”

The speakers highlighted allies and partners’ approaches to relations with Pacific Island Countries (PICs), including the strategic importance of the PICs amid growing great power competition, the importance of supporting the PICs’ own security and development priorities outside the lens of geopolitical competition with China, and how intra and inter- agency coordination among allies and partners can be improved for more effective engagement in the region.
