Science Without Borders: A Mixed Methods Study of Students' Experiences in Universities in Australia

Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation

Description

The experiences of Science Without Borders’ (SWB) students have received considerable attention from researchers and analysts, especially in Brazil. The program lasted from 2011 until 2017, and many studies have evaluated its benefits and weaknesses, including some analyses conducted from the perspective of students. However, the literature has not addressed how the students’ environment and the interactions that took place between them and their colleagues, faculty members, objects and symbols influenced their experiences. This study will investigate and identify the factors that influenced SWB students’ experiences in universities in Australia between 2011 and 2016. Ecological systems theory (EST) will be used as the theoretical framework, and the research will be performed using an explanatory sequential approach. This type of mixed methods methodology consists of a research design that uses qualitative data to explain initial quantitative results. This is a two-phase research design. It begins with the collection and analysis of quantitative data. Using results from this phase, qualitative data are collected to expand on or explore aspects identified in the previous phase.
