Description
This research project explores collaborative methods for working with sound and space and how this can move towards shaping new forms of experiential encounters. In doing so, it examines ways in which a broader and subtler understanding of spaces can significantly benefit a contemporary spatial sound installation and composition practice. This practice-led PhD has introduced dislocated recorded sounds into everyday spaces to test how this might contribute to new readings or experiences of a given space. This process is examined through an inquiry into what sound may be heard to do. To this end, recorded sound is cast in the varied role of an invitation, actor, catalyst and a means of inquiry within each of the situations in which it was introduced. As sound was introduced to rooms so that they might be collaborated with and heard, the audible traces of these meetings were gathered from them and re-shaped into new perceptual spaces, resulting in the production of the three installed works and three published compositions discussed throughout this dissertation: HOMEWORK (2019), Untitled (I Am Inside) (2020) and I Am Outside (2021), and the compositional works, 41containers (2020), HOLES (2020) and ROOMS (2021).
This research asserts that it is through the development of an evolving series of methods and tactics for approaching a space, that a more nuanced understanding of spatial sonic practice can be arrived at, with each work produced taking form through an assemblage of rooms, sound, things, audience, and artist, as opposed to the arrangement of sound and objects in space. This practice-led PhD proposes that through a closer examination and implementation of these methods and tactics, provides sound with a means of contributing to a spatial and situated experience, rather than working with recorded sound as a representational object, firmly situating itself outside the more commonly accepted approach to spatial practice. Positioning both listening audience and maker firmly within the world, rather than as positioned outside looking in.
