Description
Interactive online class for statistical thinkingTeaching statistics is challenging especially when the aim is to have an interactive class where students are active participants (experiential learners). Face-to-face classes planned in active learning classrooms where classroom designed for collaborative learning is helpful for encouraging students to be interactive. In 2020, COVID-19 pandemic forced many of institutions to move to alternative ways of teaching and learning which reduced the face-to-face activities to a minimum level. Moving all the lectures to an online platform (zoom) and running only a limited number of tutorials face-to-face was the solution my institution chose. The challenges of online classes are different depending on the level of the learning (first year versus third year) and depending on the class size (more than 1,000 and less than 50). Therefore, solutions to the challenges required careful thinking and planning to provide opportunities for the students to achieve best learning outcomes without making it too onerous for the academics. In this talk, I will present how a statistical thinking lecture for the third year statistical consulting students was moved to online teaching. Specifically, I will provide examples changes to the activities from face-to-face to online.
