Talking About the Past: What do educators think about reminiscing with girls, boys, and everyone else?

Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation

Description

Gendered reminiscing conversations in early childhood education may reinforce stereotypes. Despite efforts for inclusivity, studies show educators perpetuate binary gender stereotypes. With society's evolving gender understanding, investigating educators' role in embracing diversity is crucial. Language transmits societal gender expectations, warranting examination. While parent-child reminiscing benefits children, gender differences exist in parental styles. However, studies on educator-child reminiscing are scarce. This study surveyed Australian educators, finding no significant link between gender and responses, but emotive language correlated with emotions expressed in vignettes. Educators responded emotively to negative emotions, regardless of gender. This highlights the need for further research to understand gendered reminiscing in early childhood education.
