The visibility of Geography in the STEM field and its contribution to STEM education

Activity: Participating in or organising an eventOrganising a conference, workshop or event series

Description

The national symposium about geography and STEM was designed as an awareness building and dialogic initiative; it was important for bringing the discipline together to discuss views and advice about a recommendation in the Decadal Plan for Geography about geography being recognised as a partial STEM subject. The national symposium was generously funded by the Institute of Australian Geographers (IAG), the Geographical Society of New South Wales (GSNSW) and the Australian Geography Teachers Association (AGTA). The symposium ran as four repeat sessions and included international and national geography and science educators who were known to advocate for, and enact in their practice, geography as a STEM subject. The symposium occurred towards the end of 2020 and in 2021, a geography and STEM focused edition of Geographical Education was published.
