This research investigates the use of fieldwork in geographical teaching, learning and assessment with Year 10/11 students. Research questions include:1.What are the students’ and teachers’ existing conceptions about river processes?
2.What knowledge to geography teachers have of students’ existing conceptions and how do they use this knowledge in the classroom?
3.To what extent do current fieldwork practices promote conceptual change/development?
4.What does the literature suggest about adaptations that could be made to existing fieldwork practice?
5.How is the literature used to inform the design and implementation of a fieldwork activity to promote conceptual change/development?
6. What impact does the revised fieldwork activity have on student learning?
