Why engage in arts-based research with children?

Activity: Talk or presentationPresentation

Description

When art moves beyond technique, craft, or creation of a product it becomes a powerful vehicle for exploring perspectives (Loomis, Lewis, & Blumenthal, 2007; Marshall, 2014), opening up spaces for dialogue, and capturing qualities of life (Barone & Eisner, 2012). Through art or expressive forms, young children alongside researchers and classroom educators are empowered to investigate, inquire, and explore their social and cultural contexts, experiences, and lived realities (Alderson, 2008; O’Kane, 2008). This presentation discusses the importance and role of the arts within early childhood. It then considers how art can be approached as a form of inquiry or research with young children in educational settings. Themes of developing the voice or perspective of the child, building a sense of culture, belonging and identity, and shifting power from adult to child, will be discussed. These themes will be illustrated by drawing on existing examples of digital photography and video, drawing, and mixed media arts-based research set in educational settings with children from the literature. This presentation will conclude with practical suggestions that teachers and early childhood educators can use as a starting point for engaging in arts-based research with young children in their own classroom.
