Description
I led organisation and chaired the inception meeting for “Sustaining Coral Reef Restoration Outcomes in the Western Indian Ocean through Multi-Level Governance Engagement (WIO RESTORE). This is a three-year CORDAP-funded initiative in collaboration with Dr. Arthur Tuda of WIOMSA, with co-applicants Prof. Peter Harrison (Southern Cross University, Australia), Prof. Gildas Todinanahary (University of Toliara), Dr. Juliet Karisa (Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute), Atty. Yvonne Waweru (WIOMSA), and Dr. Vera Horigue (Macquarie University & WIOMSA).During this session, project partners from Tanzania, Madagascar, Kenya, and Australia outlined the initiative’s objectives, multi-country implementation strategy, capacity-building and governance components, and collaborative plans to strengthen scientific, technical, and policy frameworks for scalable, ecologically sound coral reef restoration across the Western Indian Ocean—critical work aimed at safeguarding reefs, fisheries, livelihoods, and coastal resilience in the face of accelerating decline.
