Description

When the BBC first started broadcasting in 1922 the women working there were mostly secretarial.

But the first general manager had a very enlightened view of how women should be treated in the workplace - as equals with men.

The second world war also provided many opportunities for women to work at the BBC, but something went wrong after the war and it has taken a long time for women to regain the opportunities lost.
