DescriptionHistory is so important and for the LGBTIQ+ community, often much of it isn’t documented or is fragmented in people’s personal stories.

In the 1980’s the community was decimated by the arrival of HIV.

It impacted frontline nurses and the community in ways that perhaps we never really understood – until now!

Geraldine Fela is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of History and Archaeology, Macquarie University. Geraldine has researched and written a new book titles Critical Care – Nurses on the frontline of Australia’s AIDS Crisis.

DescriptionHIV and AIDS devastated communities across Australia in the 80's and 90's. Amidst the crisis nurses were on the front line providing critical care to those in need. And it wasn't just the complexities of health care they were having to navigate. Homophobia, complex family dynamics and defending the rights of their patients all played out during this highly sensitive and confronting time.

Dr Geraldine Fela, historian at Macquarie University, pulled together an extraordinary account of the period in her latest book, Critical Care, nurses on the frontline of Australia's AIDS crisis, and joined Philip Clark on Nightlife to discuss the role nurses played as caregivers and political agents, helping to shape Australia's response to the crisis.
