Title Heroines of the digital age Degree of recognition International Media name/outlet The Croatian Emigrant Almanac 2021 Media type Print Duration/Length/Size 1500 words Country/Territory Australia Date 1/12/20 Description Since being assigned to serve as the head of our diplomatic mission in Australia Ambassador Betty Pavelich has worked closely with the Australian Croatian Chamber of Commerce in New South Wales, in particular with the group’s secretary Sonja Palic. The chamber hosted a meeting, the first of its kind, of its female members. One of the ideas that came out of the meeting was of fostering more comprehensive networking among the ethnic Croatian women of Australia and New Zealand. The upshot of the initiative was a gathering held in November of 2019 at the premises of the Croatian embassy in Canberra; the “Australia & New Zealand Croatian Women in Leadership Summit 2019”. The event brought together a little over one hundred women of Croatian background from across Australia and New Zealand. The two days of the gathering saw a number of topical panel discussions, with twenty-six women lecturing at the event. A second gathering had been slated for 2020 but was postponed on account of the pandemic fears and rescheduled for March of 2021. In the meantime, an “Initiative of Successful Croatian Women of Australia and New Zealand” has launched a series of virtual meetings gathering some thirty women on the Internet once a month. These mini-conferences include two or three lecture sessions led by members of the initiative or guests, followed by a round of discussion and informal socialising in smaller groups. Thanks to this effort and in spite of the inability to stage a meeting in 2020 the organisers of the initiative have succeeded in sustaining and even stepping up networking activity among the ethnic Croatian women of Australia and New Zealand. The group has also been joined by Croatian women in other parts of the world, including Croatia, Dubai, Los Angeles and New York.
