Trash & Treasure: The Man Who Saves the World

Press/Media: Expert Comment

Description

Turkish-born film scholar Can Yalcinkaya, who is completing his PhD in Media Studies at Macquarie University, is talking about a Turkish trashy treat -- The Man Who Saves the World, known as the Turkish Star Wars for its bootleg use of footage from George Lucas's sci-fi epic.

Made in 1982, it's one of the last films from the heyday of Turkish popular cinema, an era when filmmakers plundered Hollywood ideas and, yes, footage to make local genre movies. The Man Who Saves the World is set in a post-apocalyptic universe. A couple of Turkish spacemen crash on a desert planet and must bring peace to the world by defeating an evil warlord.
