    Even in the best of situations there are complicated questions to answer, but when children are part of the story and the question of custody ends up in court, then emotions can run very high indeed.

    The federal government recently passed major amendments to the Family Law act, which will come into effect in May next year.

    The changes remove the presumption of shared parental responsibility, and seek instead to prioritise the needs of the child. What will this mean for families encountering the system?
