Description
This brief report on the excavations at Ismant el-Kharab (ancient Kellis)describes the principal results in each of the excavation units. First, the inner temenos wall of the temple of Tutu: two shrines (one of which is the mammisi) and the stone structures in the north-west corner of the inner temenos, where in a room a broken stela depicting Tutu from the 1st or 2nd century AD was found. A further unit investigated was a domestic structure north of the rear of the Main Temple. In the northern part of the excavation site the two largest of a number of mud-brick mausolea (“The North Tomb Group”) were excavated. Two more areas were investigated, in one of which a house was discovered. The rubbish dumps yielded domestic material, among which large quantities of potsherds from the 1st-4th centuries AD. (OEB)
