The praying mantis in ancient Egypt

Dataset

Description

The Old Kingdom tomb scenes include a profusion of insect-inspired imagery, among them butterflies, dragonflies, locusts and grasshoppers. This study focusses on the Praying mantis and demonstrates how the (rare) representation on the wall in the tomb of Hesi in Saqqara reflects their behaviour and is evidence for keen observation of nature on behalf of the ancient artists.
