Zoser's funerary monument. Part 1: Eschatology in stone

The paramount role of King Djoser in the formation of the institution of kingship has its parallel in the model he set for the royal funerary monument, in construction technique as well as in concept. This residence of eternity provides a plethora of indications not only about eschatological notions, but also about aspects associated with kingship. The entrance structure, which is passed through in reverse, is a copy of the law court in the residence at Memphis. Its eschatological aspect is that it is the prototype of the judgment hall of Osiris (BD 125). Significantly, the only way through into the complex is through the judgement hall, where the king is seated to review those who enter. (OEB)
