Since 2016, the Macquarie University Centre for the Health Economy’s (MUCHE) short course, Introduction to Health Economic Evaluation, has strengthened capacity in economic evaluation across the health sector. The primary beneficiaries are external professionals who need to develop evidence to assess value-for-money and support decisions about health technologies and services. The course has been delivered to 300+ participants between 2016–2026, with attendees drawn from government (24%), industry (43%), academia or research organisations (25%), and not-for-profit organisations or other (8%), and 8% attended from outside of Sydney.Description of impact *
This activity has generated social and economic impact by improving participants’ capability to produce and interpret economic evidence used in health policy, procurement, translation and funding decisions that affect patients in Australia and internationally. Participant feedback indicates increased confidence and practical usefulness in workplace settings. The course has also enabled follow-on engagement, including delivering additional training for the NSW Health Commercialisation Training Program: Business Fundamentals Course (2023–2025) and for MTP Connect’s Targeted Translation Research Accelerator (2026), demonstrating demand and sustained partner engagement. “It’s voices like yours that help our companies learn, grow, and navigate the exciting but challenging path of translation and commercialisation.
