Civil Litigants denied access to retained metadata

Impact: Social impacts, Public policy impacts

Description of impact

Dr Selby's policy submission improved the privacy of 25 million Australians whose retained metadata was proposed to be made accessible to civil litigants. Upon the basis of his policy submission (which recommended against implementation of the proposal) and being interviewed / quoted in a front-page news article published in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers (and submissions by others), the Commonwealth Government declined to extend to civil litigants the ability to access retained metadata.
