Gender Equity in Medical Technology
WHAT WAS RESEARCHED - Barriers and enablers to achieving gender equity in MedTech.
WHEN THE RESEARCH OCCURRED - 2020 – 2023 (ONGOING)
WHO CONDUCTED THE RESEARCH - MQBS Health and Wellbeing Research Unit (HoWRU) with the University of Newcastle Health Services Research and Innovation Center (HSRIC).
BENEFICIARIES - Supporting women’s career longevity in MedTech benefit’s women employees as well as the employers who utilize their expertise and experience.
NATURE, TYPE AND EXTENT OF IMPACT - In 2020, the HoWRU and HSRIC engaged with the Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) to collaborate on retaining and advancing women in MedTech. Interviews with 55 employees from 14 MTAA member organisations conducted during 2020 and 2021 generated rich data on macro, meso and micro barriers and enablers to gender equity. In 2022, the interim report based on our qualitative research findings was accepted by the MTAA and has been accepted by individual MedTech participant organizations.
Our emerging impact, to date, includes:
1. Engagement of the MTAA and MedTech firms in research into the retention and advancement of women;
2. Direction of resources by MedTech organisations to employee collaboration in gender equity research efforts;
3. Wide dissemination of research findings and recommendations through funded video, webinars, summary reports and presentation.
4. Acceptance by the MTAA and individual firms of recommendations to develop interventions focusing on unique workplace characteristics in MedTech; and
This project contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality) and Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
