Personal profile

Research interests

As a medical and psychological anthropologist, I study the cultural dimensions and subjective experiences of illness, well-being, and healing. I am particularly interested in how people experience, understand, and derive meaning from misfortune, uncertainty, and disorder. My approach integrates individual experiences with the complexities of people’s broader structural, biological, and historical contexts. Please see my website for further details: https://aarondenham.com/

Research student supervision

I am interested in supervising projects related to: Global health. Child and maternal health. Infanticide. Reproductive health. An anthropology of childhood. Family relations. Ageing. Health related development activities. Misfortune and ‘disorder.’ Caregiving. Mental health and intergenerational (historical) trauma. Ethnomedicine and ethnomedical systems. Divination and related systems of diagnosis and meaning making. Risk, uncertainty, and decision-making. Phenomenological, symbolic/interpretive, narrative, critical (political-economic and ecological), and psychoanalytic approaches and theories are welcomed.
