Biography

Dr Abdullah Al Arif is an internationally experienced researcher specialising in ocean governance and the law of the sea. He completed a PhD in Law at Macquarie University with an International Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship in 2019. He holds an LLB and an LLM from Dhaka University (Dhaka, Bangladesh) and another LLM from South Asian University (New Delhi, India), in which he received the University Gold Medal for securing the first position in his class). Dr Arif completed a postdoctoral research fellowship (2021-2023) at Yokohama City University, Japan, funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). He has also been a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (HEA) since 2020.

Dr Arif has been teaching several private and public law courses at Macquarie Law School since 2016. He also worked as a Senior Research Assistant at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) from 2019 to 2020. He published several high-quality research articles in internationally ranked journals, including Marine Pollution Bulletin, Ocean and Coastal Management, International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law, Oil, Gas and Energy Law (OGEL), Asia-Pacific Journal of Ocean Law and Policy, and the Journal of World Investment and Trade. Arif published his first research monograph, Sustainable Fisheries Management and International Law: Marine Fisheries in Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal, with Routledge in December 2021.

Dr Arif received the University Grants Commission (Bangladesh) Award in 2014 for his outstanding contribution to research and publication. He has presented research outputs at numerous academic conferences in Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Arif is a member of the World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL).
