Biography

Dr Abid completed his undergraduate studies at MQ uni in medical science attaining a first-class Hons and went on to pursue his PhD in molecular neuroscience under the supervision of Prof John Christodoulou and Prof Patrick Tam at the CMRI. Having completed his PHD at CMRI in 2011, he began his research career in cancer proteomics in the lab of Prof. Mark Baker working on early detection markers of CRC using a novel ultradepletion technology using chicken antibodies. At the same time, he discovered a talent for teaching and began his academic career teaching biochemistry and cell biology. He subsequently did a second postdoc in glycomics and proteomics of colorectal cancer and finally a third in bioinformatics in the lab of Prof. Shoba Ranganathan where he worked extensively on missing proteins. Currently, he is a Lecturer in Leadership, entrepreneurship and global challenges in Science with a significant research interest in early detection of markers for colorectal cancer and other cancers. He is also the CEO of two businesses (one startup) as well as the president of Welfare Aid International, a registered charity. He serves on the boards of several other community organisations and is actively involved in curriculum and teaching development.
