Biography

In 2014 I was awarded my PhD in philosophy by the University of Sydney. In 2015 I began a three year Macquarie University Research Fellowship (MQRF). My position at Macquarie was made ongoing in 2016. I finished my MQRF in 2018, and in 2019 I began another three year research project, supported by a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA).

My current focus is on philosophy of race. I am interested in the following questions. What is race? Is race biologically real, socially real, or not real at all? If there are no races, what are there? What is the relationship between race, racism, ethnicity and ethnocentrism? Can philosophy of language help us to define these terms? What role can the history of the race concept play in answering these questions?

I also have an ongoing interest in the relationship between proximate and evolutionary forms of explanation. I am especially interested in conflations and confusions surrounding 'how' and 'why' explanations, and how they play out in work at the intersection of biology and psychology.
