Andrew’s research focuses on using gene drive technology to manipulate pathogen and pest populations. Gene drives, or selfish genetic elements, are genetic mechanisms that increase the likelihood of a specific gene or genes spreading through populations.
While promising for biocontrol applications, many gaps remain in our understanding of how best to design the components of gene drive systems, how they operate in biological systems, how safe they are, and how they might be deployed.
