Personal profile

Dr Ahumada-Canale is currently working as a research fellow at the Macquarie University Centre for the Health Economy (MUCHE). His research expertise includes systematic reviews, clinical trials, and cost-effectiveness analysis using microsimulation models, as well as trial-based analyses. He holds a PhD in Pharmacy from the University of Technology Sydney and a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.

As a pharmacist, he worked in different settings, developing his career in primary public healthcare. Here, he had the opportunity to collaborate in the development of a professional pharmacy service, which later became his PhD. As part of this, he collaborated with different stakeholders, such as the Chilean government, municipalities, centre managers, universities, and healthcare professionals. In the project, he participated in the development and implementation of a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial (The Polaris trial). In this project, he collaborated in writing the study protocol, submitted ethics applications, acted as a clinical monitor and as a practice change facilitator for 12 centres. Additionally, he published two systematic reviews, a perspective of the Chilean professional pharmacy services. He also developed the economic evaluation of the project as a two-stage analysis: a trial-based cost-utility analysis and a state-transition microsimulation model.

With his experience, Antonio is now working in health technology assessment for the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) and Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC). He is also participating in applied research in the economic evaluation of professional pharmacy services.
