Dr. Ashley R. Wilson-Smith (B.Med | M.D. | G.Dip.ClinUS | M.Surgery | M.Trauma | Ph.D. Candidate) is a surgical officer in the Sydney LHD, based at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and is pursuing a career in Cardiothoracic surgery with a focus on minimally invasive and robotic approaches, and a special interest in intensive care medicine. His medical research focus includes minimally invasive, endovascular, and robotic techniques in the management of aortic diseases, coronary bypass, valvular pathologies, intensive care, and thoracic malignancies. Dr. Wilson-Smith strongly believes in embodying the stereotype of the "clinician-scientist", where passion and pursuit of excellence in both academia and clinical work form the core components of his practice.

Dr. Wilson-Smith is involved in clinical research, teaching, and supervision as an associate, conjoint, clinical supervisor and visiting scholar at the Macquarie University, the University of Newcastle, the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the University of Sydney, UNSW Sydney, and the Sydney Adventist Hospital. He is currently supervising 20 research students with an interest in sub-specialty cardiothoracic surgery, endovascular surgery, intensive care, and radiotherapeutics, with the expectation of producing high-performing undergraduate and post-graduate research candidates. Dr. Wilson-Smith has previously been engaged in clinical trials and study protocols with several institutions, as well as supporting a number of clinical journals editorially.

Dr. Wilson-Smith has several years of clinical experience in surgery, whilst also managing more junior medical officers in an administrative/supervisory role. He has also attained competency in basic surgical assisting in general, cardiac, and thoracic surgery. Dr. Wilson-Smith is currently completing a Ph.D. (MQU) titled “The Posterior VATS Technique in Thoracic Oncology”, and has previously completed a Master of Surgery (USYD), a Graduate Diploma of Clinical Ultrasound (Echocardiography), and a Master of Traumatology (UON) with Distinction. His formative medical studies were completed at the University of New South Wales, Sydney (B.Med, M.D.). Dr. Wilson-Smith is also involved in part-time work as a Career Medical Officer (CMO) covering private hospitals on an as-needed basis.
