Biography
BEng., MBA, MMaths, PhD, PostGradDip HE (L&T), MHE (L&M)
Ayse is a Professor in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Macquarie University. She is one of the first 100 women in Australia who have been Professors.*
She was the President of the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE) (2021-2023) and the Past President of IASE (2023-2025). She is an elected Member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and the Vice President (2025-2029). Ayse’s research explores applications of statistics in health sciences and learning and teaching in statistics. She recently became the Co-Chair of Statistical Education of the Statistical Society of Australia (SSA).
Awards: Ayse was a recipient of several learning and teaching awards for her outstanding contributions to student learning such as an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for ‘Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning’, a Macquarie University VC Citation, ATEM Award Community Engagement (Highly Commended); Higher Education Award for Employability; joint-recipient of Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT). Her pedagogical research interests are focused on statistics education, such as learning approaches in statistics, work integrated learning in statistics, impact of learning spaces to students’ learning. She was awarded “Excellence in research: Five Future-shaping Priorities (Healthy People)” by Macquarie University and she was a member of research team which were the finalist of the Eureka Prize in 2017.
Research Student Supervision: I was the principal/associate/co-supervisor for 11 Higher Degree Research (MRes and PhD) students and currently I am the co-supervisor for 2 PhD students. One of the PhD students was funded via a Co-tutelle between MQ and Wuhan University, another one had a scholarship from Thailand for her MRes and PhD. Most of the other research students had an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) during their studies. In addition, I supervised 23 Master of Applied Statistics student projects.
