Biography

Ph.D. University of Sydney 1987. Postdoctoral Fellow ETH Zürich, Switzerland 1987-1989, Gritton Research Fellow, University of Sydney 1990-1991; ARC Queen Elizabeth II Fellow 1992-1997, and ARC Senior Research Fellow 1997-2002, at the University of Sydney and UNSW. At UNSW from 1999: Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, then Professor 2008-, and Head of School, Chemistry 2007-2014. Research interests

Messerle's major research contributions have been in the field of Chemistry, specifically in the areas of organometallic chemistry and catalysis and the application of NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) Spectroscopy for enhanced structural and mechanistic understanding inorganometallic chemistry. Messerle’s research program encompasses the development of catalysts and catalytic methodologies for promoting efficient and selective chemical transformations, and her team has recently developed new approaches to carbon supported hybrid catalysts. Over a sustained period Messerle has designed new metal complexes for promoting key chemical reactions. The ultimate outcome of her work will be the improved viability and selectivity of the synthesis of biologically active molecules and pharmaceuticals in the fine chemicals industry. She introduced advanced NMR techniques for application in organometallic chemistry, which provided insights into catalyst structure and function.
