Biography

Dr Carol Newall is a clinical psychologist and a lecturer in child development and mental health at the Department of Educational Studies. In her teaching, she aims to give her students an appreciation of science and the value of applying research/evidence-based approaches when working with children. Dr Newall’ research interests lie in the area of 'translational' research, using strategic basic science studies to inform interventions for childhood mental health disorders. She is currently collaborating with the Centre for Emotional Health and the E-centre Clinic to develop a teacher’s mental health literacy program to support teachers as first-responders for children with mental health disorders. Carol also heads the Pocket Rockets preschool STEM workshops with Dr Kate Highfield (Swinburne University), which aim to increase girls’ engagement in STEM in prior-to-school settings, and to deliver free workshops to children in at-risk settings (i.e., foster care) and lower SES regions. The Pocket Rockets is funded by the Ian Potter Foundation and supported by the St George Foundation. Carol is also the co-director of the research Centre for Children’s Learning in a Social World.

Beyond academic work, Carol has extensive experience as a clinical psychologist working with parents and children to improve children’s mental health outcomes. She holds a PhD and Master in Clinical Psychology from the University of New South Wales and completed her post doctorate at Macquarie University’s Centre for Emotional Health.
