Personal profile

Biography

I am a professor in international accounting, and I have served as the head of the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance. I also have other leadership roles at Macquarie University (MQ), Australia, and globally. My contributions to the academic world, business, global NGOs, and governments have been recognised by awards, international research grants, invitations to provide research leadership to overseas universities, and invitations by governments to improve accounting and governance. My research program adopts an interdisciplinary approach to provide theoretical, methodological, and empirical evidence on improving the quality of accounting, auditing, accountability, sustainability, and governance across 144 countries adopting international accounting and governance standards. My research program is impactful and attracts leading visiting scholars and research students. To enhance MQ’s research profile, I established and strengthened the International Accounting and Business Network, which has an enviable global reputation and enhances MQ's research profile. The Network comprises 16 MQ staff and 20 leading international scholars, including China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Germany, which are the primary sources of our PhD students. I have published five research monographs with Emerald and Elsevier JAI and published extensively in leading scholarly journals. For example, I have ten A* and Financial Times FT 50 and 20 A-ranked joint publications with my research students (journals ranked by the Australian Business Deans' Council). My publications are widely cited in the literature and include 2677 citations (988 since 2020), an h-index of 26 and an i10-index of 52. (Google Scholar). My publications in leading journals exceed the average number of publications for the career total by professors at almost all Go8. I am on the editorial board of eight scholarly journals, including Accounting Auditing and Accountability (ranked A*) and Advances in Accounting (A). I have received research grants from China, Japan and Australia. I have successfully supervised 16 PhD and two MRes students from seven countries to completion, including five over the last seven years who were awarded Vice-Chancellor’s commendation for thesis excellence. I have mentored scholars from Germany, Italy, Denmark, China, India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka in improving their research skills.  I have contributed to the Australian Research Council, the Research Council of Norway, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the National Science Centre of Poland and the National Science Funding Council of China. Till 2020, I was the New South Wales President of the Institute of Management Accountants. I have won several awards at MQ, including the Outstanding Research Supervision Award, Outstanding Teacher Award, Outstanding Community Engagement Award, and International Achievement Award. I was inducted into the Global Accounting Hall of Fame in 2017 for "Outstanding contribution and a lifetime of achievement". In 2018, I was recognised for "dedicated service rendered” to the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka and in 2020, for "exceptional dedication and outstanding contribution for enhancing the quality of business research in India" and in 2022, for "contributions, continued support and great collaboration" to Catholic University, Indonesia. I am passionate about improving the quality of accounting and governance, particularly in emerging countries. I am also passionate about building research and supervision capacities globally by conducting research workshops for scholars, supervisors, and research students on theoretical and methodological suggestions to improve international accounting research. For example, over 600 scholars, mainly from emerging countries, have participated in our workshops over the past ten years. I undertake top-level research in areas that excite global interest, mentor research students and colleagues, publish high-impact papers, collaborate locally and globally, and develop skills, knowledge, and attributes in the next generation.
