Dr Cliffton Chan is Associate Professor of Physiotherapy and Head of Anatomy Education at Macquarie University. His research spans from sports and occupational medicine, patient education programs, higher education pedagogy to how joint hypermobility affects human function. His work, in collaboration with an international multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians, has led to clinically useful hypermobility assessment tools, management options for people with hypermobility problems/disorders, as well as evidence-informed rehabilitation and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders in orchestral musicians and dancers. Dr Chan is an active PhD supervisor; his PhD students cover a wide scope of clinically-relevant topics, such as hand dysfunction in children with hereditable connective tissue disorders, surgery-related musculoskeletal disorders in Rhinologists and Skull Base Surgeons, and online pain interventions for people with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder.
Dr Chan is an active member of the Ehlers-Danlos Society International Consortium (allied health working group), International Association for Dance Medicine & Science, Performing Arts Medicine Association (research sub-committee), and International Association of Dance Medicine & Science (mentorship program), and continues to be part of many of Australian Society of Performing Arts Healthcare's annual activities.
Beyond research, he teaches into a number of units across the 3 years of the Doctor of Physiotherapy program, such as Healthcare Complexity and Physiotherapy (PHTY8207), Leadership, Advocacy and Business for Healthcare Professionals (PHTY8307) and Advanced Physiotherapy Practice A (PHTY8301). He oversees and works with a team of anatomy academics and technical staff to deliver innovative and high quality anatomy education across the Faculty, as well as ensure our teaching facilitaties and resources are one of the highest quality in New South Wales.
