Biography

Emre Ilhan (he/him) is a physiotherapist and lecturer within the Department of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Health, and Human Sciences, Macquarie University.  

Research interests

Emre’s research draws upon critical theory (intersectionality) to identify and address ways in which marginalisation and privilege (re)produces health inequities and injustice through intersecting systems of oppression. Emre actively engages in these approaches to inform research and teaching in:  

  1. Neonatal, infant, and paediatric pain.   
  2. Pain in LGBTQIASB+, older adults in residential aged care, disability, culturally and racially marginalised groups, and other marginalised groups.   
  3. Queer(y)ing physiotherapy, research, health care, and education.  
  4. Evidence-based health care and shared decision-making.
  5. Paediatric (cerebral palsy) and adult neurological rehabilitation.

Emre uses both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. 

Teaching and Leadership

Emre’s teaching philosophy is based on critical intersectional pedagogy applied to health professions education, with the aim to empower students to critique systems for improving health and wellbeing. Emre teaches in units within the Doctor of Physiotherapy, Doctor of Medicine, and Master of Research courses. Emre’s provides content expertise in pain management, evidence-based health care, health equity, and research training.  

Emre has the following leadership roles: 

  1. Co-chair of the MQ Ally Network Steering Committee
  2. Co-chair of the MQ d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Lived Experience Network. 
  3. Department of Health Sciences Representative of the Early Career Researcher Network of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences (EnCouRage).
  4. Faculty Representative of the MQ Early Career Researcher Advisory Committee.
