Dr Lai Ping Florence Ma is passionate about teaching and conducting research in the area of TESOL (English as a second language). She is a lecturer in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in the Department of International Studies, Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University.  

Florence is engaged with various research projects in the field of TESOL. Her early research focused on the use of the first language (L1) in support for English learning among Chinese adult migrants in Australia. Her PhD research project aimed to investigate the perceptions of native and non-native English teachers from both student and teacher perspectives, and to compare the teaching behaviour of both categories of teachers through a mixed-methods approach. Her current projects aim to evaluate academic literacy support services for students at undergraduate and doctoral levels. 

She has published papers in top-tier journals such as Journal of Second Language WritingTESOL QuarterlyInternational Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, and Linguistics and Education. She is actively engaged with the research community in her research areas and served as an Editorial Board member for TESOL Quarterly (2013-2015) and is currently serving as an editorial member for Profile: Issues in Teachers' Professional Development. She regularly reviews manuscripts for several other refereed journals such as System, Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching and Journal of Language, Identity and Education. She has presented a number of papers at various national and international conferences. 

She is a member of the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA) and the Association for Academic Language and Learning (AALL).   

Research interests

Her research interests include a wide range of areas in the field of TESOL such as NNESTs issues, use of L1, academic literacy, language teacher education, and bilingualism.    


Dr Florence Ma is the program convenor of the new EFL major at Macquarie University and is responsible for its curriculum development and delivery. Shs is the unit convenor of EFLA100, EFLA110, EFLA201, EFLA202, and EFLA302. She loves teaching and is keen to create a supportive learning environment for students. 

Prior to taking up her current position, she has had extensive experience in teaching TESOL at various levels and learning contexts in Australia and Hong Kong. She has also convened and taught various units in academic literacy, Applied Linguistics, and English teacher education at the University of Sydney and Western Sydney University.

Doctoral research project title: "Writing for scholarly publication: Practices among Vietnamese doctoral students in Australia".  

Master-by-research project title: "Experiences of publishing in English: Vietnamese doctoral students' challenges and strategies", dissertation completed in 2016.
