Biography

Frances is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Management. She is head of the Innovation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship major, and was previously course director for the Master of Commerce program.

Frances earned her PhD from Macquarie University and an MBA from the University of Dubuque, US. She received her higher education senior fellowship (SFHEA) from the Higher Education Academy, UK.

Professional Experience

Previous professional experience includes senior management positions in marketing, advertising, and consulting. Her most senior role was executive partner and client service director at one of Europe’s biggest advertising agencies, Euro RSCG, now Havas Creative. Her industry experience covered planning, strategy and implementation of international marketing and advertising campaigns for Intel, Volvo, BP, Dell Computers, Sara Lee, Nestle. Frances continues to engage with industry leaders and entrepreneurs, so her teaching remains relevant and up-to-date.

Research

Frances’s research interests are in entrepreneurial networks, entrepreneurship, internationalisation, and small businesses. Her research has been published in Journal of Business Research, The International Journal of Business Education, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Management Organization, and in small business and export-related online media such as MyBusiness Online and DynamicExports Online. She has presented at international and Australian academic conferences and her research has been published in conference proceedings, including Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, Higher Education Research and Development Australasia, Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research Exchange, Australia and New Zealand International Business Academy, European International Business Academy, Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management.

Frances held a visiting invitation to the University of Goettingen, Germany and visiting positions to Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogota, Columbia and Shanghai International Studies University, China.

Her research engagement includes reviewing for academic journals such as The International Journal of Management Education, International Small Business Journal, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research, Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Management and Organization. She regularly reviews conference papers for Academy of Management.

Teaching

Frances takes a constructivist and experiential approach to teaching.  Students are inspired to bring theories to life through practice and to learn by doing. Her teaching interests are in entrepreneurship, small business ownership, business models and internationalisation. She has developed new units such as Application of Business Models and Entrepreneurship at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She teaches at MBA, GMBA, post-graduate and under-graduate levels. Frances has won two Teaching Leadership grants to research contemporary perspectives on innovative teaching. She was awarded a MQBS Teaching Excellence Award in 2019 and again in 2021. In both years she was awarded the Highly Commended for the Vice-Chancellor Teaching Excellence Award. She was also awarded two teaching grants, in 2020 and 2021.

Frances continues to explore creative ways to optimally engage students and continues to collaborate with colleagues to improve learning for both students and academics.

Leadership and Service contributions

Beyond her role as a lecturer, Frances actively contributes to the academic community as a Teaching Excellence Advisor. In this capacity she mentors academic peers in teaching practices, and assists in applying for awards, teaching fellowships and promotions. She participated in the Vice-Chancellor PIVOT project, a university-led project to explore ways to integrate innovative pedagogy. Frances is also part of the International Partner Engagement and Adopt-a-School programs, both programs are initiatives from MQBS to involve academics in external engagement with potential students.
