Biography
I am a Lecturer in the School of Psychological Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences at Macquarie University. I completed my B. Arts (Psychology)(Honours) at the University of Sydney in 2012 and my combined Ph.D./Master of Psychology (Clinical) at UNSW in 2019. I then completed a postdoctoral research fellowship from 2019-2020 before becoming a Lecturer in the School of Psychology at UNSW from 2021-2022. I relocated to Umeå, Sweden from 2022-2024, during which time I worked as a clinical psychologist for UNSW and guest lecturer for Umeå University. In 2025, I returned to Sydney to commence my faculty position at Macquarie.
I am a Clinical Psychologist and certified therapist and within-agency trainer in Parent-Child Interaction Therapist (PCIT).
My program of research is concerned with improving treatment outcomes for young children with severe conduct problems (e.g., non-compliance, temper tantrums, aggression). My research has a ‘big picture’ focus, asking how we can use novel delivery formats to improve the accessibility of early interventions for this population, especially in underserved settings. I've conducted several clinical trials demonstrating the feasibility of delivering interventions using online and school-based delivery formats implemented in rural and otherwise structurally-disadvantaged communities.
My research also takes a ‘closer look’ approach, identifying the families for whom evidence-based interventions are less benficial. I've used this research to inform innovative methods for personalising interventions for children with conduct problems, with the aim of optimising the therapeutic benefit of these interventions. I've published several studies demonstrating that personalised early intervention can strengthen treatment effects, especially among children with complex clinical profiles and unique treatment needs. I am particularly interested in understanding the treatment needs of families of children with callous-unemotional traits (i.e., lack of empathy and guilt), a developmental risk factor for psychopathy in adulthood.
I primarily use Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in my research. PCIT is an evidence-based Parent Management Training program that uses real-time coaching of the parent-child dyad to strengthen the parent-child relationship and improve parenting skills. I am a strong advocate for the use of scientific knowledge to inform clinical assessment, diagnosis, formulation, and treatment. I also believe that scientific innovation can and should be driven by real-world clinical experience. I thoroughly enjoy training and supervising trainee and qualified psychologists in PCIT, working with trainees to develop their understanding and practice in issues related to parenting, child behaviour change, and process issues that arise when working with the family system.
I am currently the course convenor for PSYC8986 Psychological Assessment 1, a core subject in the Master of Clinical Psychology degree at Macquarie University. I strive to deliver student-centred, inclusive, and active learning experiences, with the aim of helping develop the competencies of Australia's psychology workforce and ultimately provide evidence-based and client-centred care to the community.
