Professor Gumley is Head of the Macquarie Hand Unit and the Director of Clinical Governance at Macquarie University.

Current appointments include Conjoint Associate Professor at Macquarie University, Conjoint Associate Professor at South West Clinical School UNSW, Visiting Medical Officer at Liverpool, Sydney and Sydney Adventist Hospitals and Board Chairman of the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE in Phnom Penh.

He has held prior appointments with Harvard and Boston Universities, and is the former Vice-Chair of Orthopaedics at the Lahey Clinic, Boston, and Director of the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE in Phnom Penh.

Areas of Clinical Interest 

  • Hand, Wrist and Microsurgery
  • All areas of adult and paediatric hand surgery, with a particular interest in peripheral nerve surgery, reconstructive wrist surgery and and arthroscopy

Research Interests

  • the assessment and development of surgical operative skills
  • biomechanical assessment of novel fracture fixation methods
  • development of ergonomic and efficient surgical instruments
  • image intensifer functional tomography
  • tendon repair techniques
  • the use of ultrasound to enhance surgical instrumentation
