Hannah Vogel is researching ableism and disability in the ancient world and the disciplines of history and archaeology. She has also presented and published on inclusive pedagogy. Her most recent publication focuses on scholarly approaches towards disability in ancient world studies, particularly ableist narratives in Egyptology. Her research interests include health and welling, bioarchaeology, paleopathology and Egyptology.
She is an advocate for accessibility and has worked in public outreach, education and inclusive pedagogies. Hannah is a PhD candidate at the Department of History and Archaeology at Macquarie University and centre manager of the Centre for Ancient Cultural Heritage and Environment (CACHE). She is the former coordinator for the MQ Department of History and Archaeology’s outreach program, Studying the Past and a member of the Macquarie Theban Tombs archaeological field season in Egypt Jan-Feb 2024.
Hannah Vogel’s research interests are interdisciplinary. She is interested in disability, health and wellbeing across the ancient world, including how individuals, communities and cultures respond to disability at different times and geographical spaces. She hopes to explore themes of identity and belonging, diversity and inclusion and accessibility in past contexts, but also how these themes are relevant to historical and archaeological disciplines today. Of particular interest to her research are historiography, ethics and theoretical frameworks from anthropology and sociology (including gender theory, identity theory, embodiment theories and more). More broadly Hannah’s research includes components of archaeology (material culture and mortuary behaviour), biological anthropology (paleopathology, human osteology and published archaeological scientific techniques such as X-ray and CT scanning).
I have served as an in-demand sessional staff member across several units in the Department of History and Archaeology, MQ, including:
In 2023, I was appointed as the unit convenor leading the delivery of AHIS2301 Archaeology of Death and Burial. Including staff management, grade moderation, unit administration and teaching.
